The
Pioneer Family GALBRAITH
Author:
Unknown
Preface
by Copyist BG Galbraith
The
copy of "The Pioneer Family GALBRAITH" that I received from Jim
Nerone was from the original held by Mary Rea Eubanks, a Benton, Illinois
Librarian. It was given to her by
Dorothy Leota (Bailey) Zwengel, the widow of Adolph Zwengel. Dorothy's Mother, Bessie Pearl Wright, had
two brothers, James Arthur Wright and Charles Herbert Wright. These were grandchildren of Jimmy Galbraith.
James
died in 1954 at age 60 and Charles died in 1979 at age 74. The unknown author of the Galbraith history
makes two potentially identifying comments in passing during his historical
narrative. First he made reference
to Jimmy Galbraith Sr. as being his grandfather.
Second, he mentioned that Sam Galbraith, son of Milton Galbraith Sr.
died "last year". Sam's
death in 1951 puts the publication date of the Galbraith History in 1952.
In
copying this document, I have attempted to retain all of the misspellings,
punctuation errors and some other likely errors so that the original content
is maintained. The bulk of the document
I received was typed, but a few entries and pages were hand-written. Italics is used to denote hand-written text
in this copy. It is not known who
added the hand-written text.

William
Galbraith Sr. was born in North Ireland of Scotch-Irish stock coming to the
United States when young, he married his wife Rebecca when she was about 19.
They established their home in the southeast corner of Hamilton county
Illinois, and raised there family there.
William Sr. was a farmer and a school teacher.
Because he didn't live up until such a time as any of the oldest now
or lately living can remember for certain that he did not live to become an
aged man, but because he raised a large family we know he didn't die until
at least middle life. He was probably born 1796, while Washington
was President and George III was King of England.
We
are not sure of the maiden name of Rebecca his wife, some say it was Jackson. Sam Galbraith Jr. son of Milton Sr. who personaly,
as a child knew her when she lived part time in the home of his father said
before his death last year, that her name was Lucas. Jim Plasters and the other old timers have
believed it to be Jackson. There is
a family legend so wide spread that it would appear to have some foundation,
that she was a first cousin of President Andrew Jackson. The story is that they were first cousins, but the relationship
may have been more distant. She lived
in the home of Joseph Plasters, father of Jim and Neal Plasters part time
until her death in 1890 at the ripe old age of 88.
She was commonly called Granney. She
came to Illinois from the state of Georgia in 1818 the year the state of Illinois
became a state, She was about 16 years old at the time.
Both
William Sr. and Rebecca lie buried at the old unkept cemetery near the home
of the late Sam Galbraith Jr. in southeast Hamilton (I think) on R.F.D. #2. The name of the cemetery is "Old Rough"
Their sons Oliver and John and their wives also lie there.
Jim
Plasters an intelligent man was 20 years at the time of death of his Grandmother
Rebecca and yet it appears he never had the natural curiosity to learn
for certainty the name with which she was born.
The
family name of Galbraith is a Scottish clan name. The clan land holdings were just South of Lock (lake) Lomand and
included the city of Dumporton Scotland.
Some of the Galbraiths emegrated to north Irland and from there to
America, as did many other Scots, to become later known in the United States
as the Scotch-Irish.

From
what I have heard, Henry Sr. was about 5 feet 9 inches tall weighing about
150 pounds. I have seen a picture
of him taken during his later years, showing him to be a sober faced man with
a full head of hair wearing chin whiskers shaved side of face and with a mustache.
Uncle Milt told me he was mor like Oscar in face, body and movement
than any of his other sons. It may be as in my case beard did not grow
on the sides of the face, but on the chin and upper lip.
He
raised a large family7 and developed a good farm home about 3 miles East of
Thompsonvill. After his death his
son Jim Jr. owned and lived on his place for years selling out to a family
of Osborns two brothers and a sister. The
sister and her husband lives there last I knew.
Henry
Galbraith was a man of character and a leading citizen of the community. He liked to experiment with the grafting and
budding of fruit trees. Have heard
it related he had several varieties of apples growing on a single tree. He once developed by design or accident a new
variety of apple that for some time had a degree of popularity. It was called by his name Galbraith Pippin
or some such don't remember just what.
His
Wife was Delilah Hogan a sister of John H. Hogan, Olive (Hogan) Irby, Sophie
(Hogan) Mcfarland and others.
His
second wife (mother of Oscar) was Malissa (Pus) Perryman a sister of Aaron
(A) Perryman.
Henry
and both of his wives are buried at Pleasant Hill. I don't believe he belonged to any church.

She was the oldest of the children of Henry Sr. and Delilah (Hogan)
Galbraith.
Bill
Waller her first husband died of pneumonia while still a young man. He was the son of Lewis (Loon) Waller.
Henry
Hays was a widower at the time he married Sarah Ann. He was a stocky man, full bearded, a Union Soldier and a Gentleman.
After Henry Hayes died Sarah Ann lived for a time with Miles Ice and
his wife Harriett (Galbraith) Ice. Harriett being her sister and youngest of the children. Later she moved to the home of another sister,
Martha (Galbraith) Stubblefield wife and widow of Joe Stubblefield, where
she lived the balance of her life. She
died of an internal cancer. She is
buried at East Fork Church and Cemetery. She was a small straight, slim, dark-haired,
dark eyed woman weighing about 100 pounds.

Dan
McFarland was a red headed man, he was sparley built and got around much as
a old man from the time he was in middle life, but he lived to the age of
93. He was a farmer but he liked to
travel about the county selling something to the people, nursery stock, patent
churns - anything. He liked to drink
but otherwise lived a moral life. He

Sophia
Galbraith Lampley was a small woman about 5 foot 3 inches tall weighing 118
to 120 pounds. She was straight of
back and limb, dark hair streight - which she parted in the middle and knotted
upon the lower back of her head. She
had dark eyes and a rather high and broad forehead. She was the quite reserved type of person but friendly with those
about her; she was an honest upright person, not given to too much gossip
about others.
She
was industerious and capable. Good
at sewing, made all of her clothes. And
that of her childern. Did some work
outside the family for pay. She died
at the age of 32 of pneumonia. Delilah
her only girl child was born prematurely and lived
less than a week. Born during her
last illness.
Mose
Lampley was 5 feet 8 inches weighing 165 as a yound man and 185 in middle
life, streight and huskey and athletic as a youth.
Had dark red hair and mustache. Hair
was streight and grew loose, he wore it rather long. Rather long face and head, ruddy complection.
He was a likeable, like talk and joke friends.
Never taking life too seriously. He
never care much for hard work. This
care free attitude used to irk his wife Sophia and his mother as well.
Yet his mother thought more of him than any of her other childern. I believe he did a lot of visiting about the
neighborhood just to talk to the people and had more friends than most people
have. He died at the age 46 with pneumonia.
He had suffered a previous attact about five years before.

Milton
was about 5 feet 8 inches weighing 140 to 150, slightly stooped, slightly
bowed legged and slightly pigeon toed. Had
streight brown hair and a nice untrimmed mustache, inclined to be a little
curly and didn't hang over his mouth. He
had a well shaped head and good features, with gray eyes. He was quite and retiring but friendly and
jovial with those he knew well and liked.
He had his good points and his bad ones even as you and I, but he was
honest.
When
he was a boy there was a popular humors book in circulation called "Pecks
Bad Boy" Somebody started calling
Milton Pecks Bad Boy and this was finally shortened to "Peck" by
which name he was known as a boy, a youth and a man. As those of his age and older died off the nickname became less
and less used and more people called
him "Milt". He was never
called "Peck" much by his brothers and sisters. His brother Jim called him by his full name
of Milton.
His
first wife was Cordelia (Deal) Spain a daughter of "Jim" Spain a
big full bearded man who looked like John Brown.
His second wife was Ellen Lampley a daughter of Stephen (Big Steve)
Lampley and a widow of Mose Lampley. Being
Moses' second wife. Milton and both
wives are buried at Pleasant Hill.

Frances,
a sister of Henry Sr. and her husband Joseph Plasters raised their family
in Cantheel School district, where I first attended school. Jim and Neal Plasters were big boys in this
school when I was in the Chatt Class and so also were Gilbert "Gib"
and Bryant Heard, They were the sons of Mount and grandsons of Harriett Galbraith
Plasters and her husband. Joe Mount
Heards name was Mounteville, he was called Mount for short. Carroll Gulley was the father of Will and Dick
Gulley.

Oliver
Galbraith another brother of Henry Sr.. I saw him once when I was kid. The only one of the family I ever saw in my
recollection. He was rather small,
stocky man smooth shaved and had a ruddy complection. He was pointed out to me at a public auction sale. He was standing alone - Galbraith Fashion watching
proceedings. I knew only Carroll of
his childern. This family lived in
the West End community.
